In Home Security

Spring is right around the corner, and soon the snow will melt and leave us with warmer weather.  As much as we’d love for the cold weather to go away, spring and summer also bring a higher number of home burglaries.

During the summer, the days are longer and being outside is much more appealing than during the winter.  Summer is also a time for taking long family vacations, leaving your home for long periods of time.  In the Northeast, seasonal burglaries are very common, and it’s important for homeowners to take precautions in order to avoid becoming victims of theft.  The most effective way to avoid a break-in is to make your home a difficult target.  Make your home less appealing to burglars by doing the following:

  • Lock all of the doors.  This includes the front door, back door, and garage door.  Also consider reinforcing your doors with a deadbolt lock.
  • Maintain a “lived in” appearance. Make your home appear is if someone is there regularly.  Some homeowners hook up timers to their lights, allowing them to turn on in the evenings.
  • Tell a trusted friend or neighbor if you are going away.  Have someone check up on your home every once in awhile to collect your mail, feed your cats, or just make sure everything is as it should be.
  • We’ve said this before: Don’t post where you’re going on Facebook!  You don’t know who your real “friends” are on social media.  Don’t take any chances.
  • Install a security system.  A burglar will almost certainly skip your home if they know you have a security system, especially if your system includes video surveillance.  Some systems, like Honeywell’s Total Connect, feed a live video to your computer or mobile device, allowing you to check on your home at any time during the day.  Talk to the sales representatives at Seacoast Security for more information about our alarm systems by calling (800)-654-8800.
